That was a hot week for Baltimore and a busy week for RMG. Art and Design for our corperate identity continues, both on beta.robotmartini.com and off-line on our hard drives. The biggest downer is, unless you are a graphic designer (or the Angry Daughter of a Typesetter), you wont find the nuts and bolts of what we are working on very interesting ;-)

Game Night vs Lunch Money

Also last week, the Robot Martini T-Shirts arrived. We did principle photography Saturday and Sunday, and if the heat doesn't blow out my computer we should have them up on the site early this week.

The shirts are 2 color silk screened on Hanes' "Tagless" shirts. They claim to be pre-shrunk, but with 100% cotton shirts, I am always a bit suspicious of shrinkage.

MechaShiva and I made Robot Heads too... but you wont get to see them until early next week ;-)

.357 Magnum (shots!)

GWG's Ezekiel Bailey and I hit the town each wednesday night. Our goal is to experience something new each time and tell you about it. Got a drink you want us to try? Let us know down in the comments below!

This weeks drink got off to a sluggish start. Zeke had planned on subjecting me to an Afgan Whore down at the Yacht Club, but was thwarted by the universe's worst bartender. Not only did he claim he was out of every liquor we could name, when asked what he could mix, he shrugged and told us he "only drinks beer".

Booze shortages and no will to pour root beer or yogurt aside, it struck Zeke and I totally dumbfounded that a bartender would refuse to offer drink suggestions. So we picked up our stuff and headed back up the road.

The night was finally cooling down, the rain had let up, and there was a nice car crash on the way. So our spirits were already raised as we headed into McOshea's.



.357 Magnum
Stir 1 oz Vodka (plain) and 1 oz Rum (plain) into 3/4 of a glass of 7up. Then top it off with Ameretto. This gives the drink a bullet in a bullet casing look, which is somewhat lost when you add straws and ice. In this case, we had limes on the side.


As a sipping drink, it takes the buffet approach. The bullet is crisp and clean; the shell casing is syrupy and sweet, and the lime mingles in between. If you want thicker flavor, pull your straw up. If you want thin crispness, push your straw down.

No real surprises here.

As a shot, the drink behaves totally different. It has a one-two punch, oddly starting with the bottom of the drink, and finishing off with an almost whiskey like punch of almond.

Even though I didn't like the actual taste as much, the novelty and originality of the shot made me like it more. Obviously, Zeke sided with taste, and liked the sipping drink more.

It is worth noting that this drink is nicely alcoholic. Zeke, whose blood is roughly 80 proof, was nicely buzzed after our two drinks. So considering the price of largely rail-friendly booze, this may be worth considering.

Power Beer

Drink night was cut short this week, a casualty of the 'been drinking all weekend while out of town' syndrom. Still, wednesday is wednesday and some drinking has gotta happen. So here, for your entertainment is "Power Beer".

take a 1/2 keg of Yeungling brand beer and go to a 50 person party
have 20 people not show up and the rest bring their own beer
drain keg into any and all containers lying around your house
drink on any given night

So... post keg, flat, teppid beer. Yeah, yummy! The flavor is not unlike bog water, which could describe the texture too. Still, the contents are midly alcoholic and paced-well, you can keep yourself solidly drunk off a 1/2 kegs worth for at least a week.

The gateraid bottle worked better than most containers. Compaired to the 2L's of Coke, which went flat quicker, and the dozen dasani bottles, which were unpeasantly small & hard to drink from, the gator was half way okay (in it's own getting you drunk way)

definitely 1 burp out of 5 though.

We were about 10 feet from the explosion when it happened, but thankfully Griff and I are both fine. Had we not taken a little longer at the post office, we would have been standing directly in front of the blast on our way up Hickory Street in Hampden. Judging from the amount of shrapnel embedded in cars and the sidewalk on the opposite side of the street, that would have been lethal.

Our thoughts go out to those inside the house, and the many children next door who were not so lucky.

Explosion

It felt like an IED video... just a sudden, unexpected pop that sounded like a balloon. A very loud balloon sure. A black cat went running across the street, along with timber and glass. then a fraction of a second later the front porch buckled and fell forward into the yard.

I pulled out my phone and called the police. Busy signal. Called again, phone didn't connect through, shouted at others to call.

Holding a package, Griff is freaking out.

A number of men are running into the house next store. Screaming is coming. A few children are pulled out. An older woman. Then eventually a man from the house which is missing its front. He looks almost comical, covered in soot.

It's chaos, no one knows if there are more people inside, Griff is trying to get one of the boys to sit down. The back of his head has been blown open, exposing a 6 x 1 inch slice of brain. He trots off, unwilling to sit down.

The older woman, a grandmother of three, is frantic, unable to be clear. The men go back into her house, the fire trucks are showing up, then the police, then more fire trucks. it seems like an eternity before he medics show up. we're walking away from the seen when they do. Griff doesn't want to see what the firemen have found.

I returned later to check on friends across the alley. They are fine thankfully -- not there during the blast. the firemen have said the owner (the sooty man) had a propane tank on a space heater. Perhaps an O2 tank. The grandmother says he didn't have a working furnace, during a short sob filled interview on TV. He was trying to stay warm.

Very surreal evening.

Thanks giving card

Still going backwards. Here is the thanksgiving greeting card, following on the heels of XMass. This was pretty enjoyable to work on. It started as a number of line drawings taken from multiple pages in my sketchbook. Then I cut through the pieces I didn't like to get a composition that was 'okay'. Each piece gets colored separately, which ended up looking blegh on a whole (but lets each piece work as an individual icon, for shirts and such). So I dropped a low intensity coloration layer on it and it came together for the most part.

Halloween is next :P
